Blurb:

Depressed by his inability to honor his deceased brother by farming his land and wedding his wife, Kirk Pepperman is struggling with his bleak future.

Perpetually cast as the girl next door, Mary Beth Owens knows her parents are arranging a marriage between Kirk and herself. Loving him wasn’t a problem, but if he couldn’t please her, then why bother?

Can this couple forget the past and have a future together?

Excerpt:

What did this place hold for him?

Nothing.

Yet, the rolling hills covered by farmland and grazing cattle called to something deep inside him. Which was why he hadn’t ventured outside of Naked Bluff to experience another way of life. Recalling how his adventurous brother had died so far away from home, a heart-wrenching depression filled him. But unable to bear the unhappiness ahead, he understood Richard’s desire to leave.

What future can I have here?

Again, considering the idea of joining the Confederate army, he recalled the latest news from the returning soldiers. According to them, the south wasn’t faring too well against the Northern armies. Maybe, if he had something to fight for, he’d feel alive again.

The familiar noise of a rope whizzing through the air alerted him. The lasso fell over his shoulders and circled his chest before it tightened, pinning his arms to his side. “What the…”

With a sharp tug, he fell against the center pole, causing his skull to bang against the solid bulk. “What the hell are you doing?”

Yanking on the rope, Mary Beth Owen walked around him, winding the cord across his chest. “Just sit still while I tie you up, and then we’ll talk.”

“Why do you need to tie me up for us to chat?” Shifting, he attempted to stand or break free of the bindings, but she had affectively robbed him of the ability to move. Already defeated by his earlier thoughts, he studied her determined gait as she circled him several times. What bee has gotten into her bonnet!

Finally, pausing behind him, she secured the end and stepped to one side. “That should hold you for a while so we can talk.”

Irked at the position she’d put him in, he glared at the radiant smile on her face and the amusement in her crystal blue eyes. Anger bloomed in his gut, and he nodded curtly. “Fine, say your peace and leave.”

Stepping in front of him, she rammed her fists onto her hips in an arrogant act of dominance. But at little over five feet tall, she didn’t possess an imposing stature. Most would say she was a sweet child. However, he knew better. If riled, she always used every ounce of strength she owned to fight. Having worked on a farm all her life, she possessed more muscles than most people gave her credit for having. “Are you through pouting about your ex-sister-in-law? She’s married, and there’s absolutely no way she’ll ever be with you.”
