Saturday Spankings - Rescue

Happy Saturday to all. I’m still doing snippets from Cassie’s Ordeal, seventh in the Cassie Series books.

Cassie ordeal of being taken from her home and held captive has been a terrifying experience. Trying to convince her captor that he doesn’t have to restrain her she has spent the day seeming to go in and out of consciousness. Even after being rescued she still isn’t certain of what all is happening.

Mike Reynolds became furious that I had been overheard by the police. I don’t know how many times he hit me, but he got in several blows before the police got him subdued. I remember nothing about being taken to the hospital. Once there I still wasn’t very clear. I felt I was in a hospital, but I also thought that it just might be another dream. I had spent all that time pretending to be out of it, and I was still in that frame of mind. Someone was telling me to open my eyes. Someone asked me to squeeze their hand. I was scared to do either.

Meanwhile the police bought Tom and Ryan to the hospital. One of the first people they saw as they rushed in, was Richard Bridges, my personal physician. He had come to the hospital when he heard that the police thought they had the suspect contained. I found later that I was the lead story in the news that day. I think I prefer anonymity. “Where, where …” was all Tom could get out.

Richard was firm, “Give me five minutes, Tom. Let me check her out. I promise I’ll get you back there in minutes. But wait right now.” He then turned and hurried down the hall.

“We’re not getting a good response,” he was told as he walked in. “She’s not responding to commands.”

Richard came over to me; looking at all the monitors they had me hooked to. He pulled my eyes opened one at a time and shined a light into them. Seeing and hearing Richard gave me hope; this dream didn’t seem to be fading. “Cassie,” he said firmly, “we can’t let Tom back here until we get some cooperation from you.”

Richard addressed the nurse. “I’ve known Cassie for years. If you want to get anything from her you need to wave her husband in her face.” The nurse began questioning me again.

“Can you tell us your name?”

“Cassie Duff.”

“Ms. Duff, do you know where you are?”

“I’m in a hospital.”

“What year is it, ma’am?”

I told them.

Richard spoke then, “How old are you?”

Richard is fully aware I don’t like to say my age in front of anyone.

I slowly turned my head to look at him. He seemed real and I reached out to take hold of the front of his shirt to make sure he didn’t vanish. Holding on to his shirt I told him in a soft voice, “It’s no one’s business how old I am, and if you want to see another birthday go get Tom.” Richard’s booming laughter seemed to fill the hospital.

Saturday Spankings - Tom's worst nightmare

Welcome back to Saturday Spankings – a blog hop I enjoy very much and I’d like to encourage others to join. I’m doing snippets from Cassie’s Ordeal, the 7th in the Cassie’s Space series. Last week Sue realized that Cassie had been taken, presumably by the mysterious caller.

Through the work of several sheriff departments, they now know who has her and where. Tom and Ryan go with the officers to be close at hand. A hostage negotiator speak with the man as Sue and the others, back at the house, listen on a police radio.

Reynolds said nothing, but didn’t hang up. The negotiator continued, “Right now we need to speak with Mrs. Duff. Put her on the phone, we just want to make sure she’s all right. ”

There was a nasty laugh then, “You want to know if she’s all right? She’s just great. You tell old money bags that I’ve really enjoyed my afternoon with her. But I’m afraid Miss Cassie’s tied up at the moment and can’t come to the phone.” And he hung up again. Ryan told us later he wanted to jerk the headphones off Tom. Ryan was nearly sick with dread, but the idea of what Tom was going through was destroying the boy.

They called back. “Mr. Reynolds, this can all be worked out. None of this is irreparable. Is Mrs. Duff hurt? Does she need any medical attention?”

That sickening laugh came again. “You tell Duff she’s just fine. He’ll get her back, maybe a finger one day, a hand the next. I don’t know,” he sneered. “She might be dead. It’s hard to tell with all that blood.”

Tom jerked violently. But then, in the background, they heard Cassie, loud, clear as a bell and angry, “You stop that and let me speak to my husband!”

Then there was a commotion, the phone was dropped and they heard Cassie cry out in pain. Suddenly the radio back at the house where we were listening exploded with chatter. “Hostage under attack! GO! GO! GO!”

He sighed heavily. Snapping at her wouldn’t convince her to stick around. “Have you thought about me over the years?”

Her bottom lip trembled, then she sucked it between her teeth. “Of course I have. High school was a long time ago, and our dreams clashed. You wanted a laidback life, even though you cut loose with Susannah in college. I wanted big-city living, and I got it. I like it.”

“So a rich-ass condo means that much to you? You want a new job slaving away five or six days a week for some major corporation until you’re exhausted?” He silently cursed. Not only did he slave away at his job, he was growing more tired of it by the day.

Good job, man. Way to control your temper.

In the back of his mind, he’d always believed he and Harmony would find one another again. Susannah and Claude didn’t compute. How crazy was that? Did he marry someone so different from himself because, subconsciously, he didn’t want the relationship to work?

A frown creased her brow. “I don’t need or want expensive things, but I like to work, to feel useful. My dream home is a little yellow bungalow with a big yard in a suburb.” She rocked in the chair as though she longed to jump up and run out the door. “I don’t want to argue. Let’s finish eating and hit the slopes.” She polished off her chips in a handful of loud crunches.

“What did you expect?” His throat constricted. “We’ve never hashed this stuff out since Susannah and Claude were always stuck up our asses. It’s time we deal with it.”

She scowled, then finished her grinder.

Birley gritted his teeth. Why had he been so stupid all those years ago? He’d wanted her to attend the University of Vermont with him, but she balked at another lengthy stint in school. He never should’ve walked off, leaving her crying on the porch of her parents’ house. She wanted time to think about her future—they’d only graduated from high school that morning—but her refusal didn’t mean she’d stopped loving him.

Too bad he hadn’t realized the truth at the time. She’d hurt his pride and broken his heart. Nothing mattered but hurting her in return. They avoided each other for the rest of the summer, then he headed off to the university.

God, how he’d missed her. She’d continued to work for her uncle while earning her accounting degree at a local community college and later moved to New Jersey for her job. Any chance of repairing their relationship had left with her, but by then, he was with Susannah.

Birley ate the rest of his sandwich, which slid down his gullet like cardboard. “No matter what you decide, I’m happy you’re home now.” The hope in his chest deflated. He stood and tugged on his gloves. “Let’s hit one of the blue squares. You okay with that?”

She nodded and followed him up. After they threw away their trash, they left the lodge.

Saturday Spankings - Panic

Welcome to the first Saturday Spankings in December. I haven’t even used this year yet, how can it be December? In this snippet from Cassie’s Ordeal, the seventh in the Cassie’s Space series, we hear from Sue.

Cassie’s worrisome phone calls did not stop and Tom decided to take her away until Sheriff Bennett can find out who is behind them. Unfortunately, he waits about a half a day too long.

This is Sue. I know you didn’t come here looking for me, you’re looking for Cassie. There’s been a lot of that going on latelyIt wasn’t quite twelve thirty when I headed back to her house. The first thing I saw as I pulled up was that the front door opened. That wasn’t right. They rarely used the front door and that it was standing opened – I felt pure horror as I rushed in calling Cassie’s name. Cassie’s purse, with the contents spilled all over the floor, was the first thing I saw. Stepping in, I saw her phone, the glass shattered, on the floor across the room.

I hope to God to never in my life feel that kind of panic again. I had to find her, I was scared she was in the house hurt or worse and I bolted to her bedroom, it was empty. I couldn’t look further. I felt like I was drowning, the air around me seemed thick; I headed back to the front door when the word ‘crime scene’ came to mind. Reaching the front porch I felt dizzy and collapsed into a small chair there. Turning my head quickly I was sick in the yard. I had to find Cassie, I had to call 911, I had to call Tom, I had to call Steve, yet I couldn’t move. And I remember praying – please don’t let this be real.

~~

I know I’ll always remember that afternoon in bits and pieces. I remember stumbling from the porch as Kate, Allie’s mother, pulled into their driveway. She was trying to find out what had happened when the deputy came through on his rounds. I don’t know what I told them. I remember being in Kate’s kitchen, people were coming and going. Both the sheriff and Brandon Weeks, one of his deputies, asked me questions and I suppose I answered them, but I don’t know what I said.

Leaving the kitchen I went to Kate’s living room and curled up on the couch. I wanted to believe if I just kept my eyes closed it might all be a dream. I’d lost track of time, but I heard Tom come in talking rapidly to the sheriff. Tom looked like death itself. Steve came to me, and held me quietly for the longest time saying nothing.

When Allie and Ryan rushed in, Allie came directly to me. Steve hugged her and said, “Stay with her, I’m going to check on Tom.”

Allie sat with me and held my hand as everyone came and went. She never stopped crying, I felt too numb for tears.
