It’s good to be back for Saturday
Spankings. I’m sticking with my newest book, Becoming Family. If you do have
extra reading time this summer I really think you’ll like my Cassie series too.
You can get the first one, Cassie’s Space, for .99, give it a try.
In today’s snippet, Jenny has warned
Cal that her parents are nothing like his and it doesn’t take her mom long to
prove her right. She quickly gets Jenny off to herself to rage at Jenny for bringing Cal to their home. Jenny and Cal decide to leave even before
dinner is served. Jenny’s mother is furious that her daughter will not stay and
finish the conversation.
“Conversation? That was hardly a conversation. I think I
got the gist, Mother. You hate Cal, though you don’t know him at all. You think
he’s not good enough for me and you won’t permit me to associate with a lowly
county sheriff. You think I’m seeing Cal as a way of rebelling against you,
rather than realizing he’s the best thing that ever happened to me. Does that
sum it all up pretty well?
Taking Cal’s hand Jenny opened the front door and headed
for the car. Following them out Jenny heard her mother behind her, “You’ll
marry that man over my dead body!” she spat at her.
Jenny turned and stared for a moment at the woman who had
given her birth, “I wonder if Daddy will miss you?” she asked before getting in
and slamming the door.
Cal looked over at her as he pulled away, “Now that’s the
girl I fell in love with.”
Against overwhelming odds, Jenny and Cal are together and happy. Their love is strong, but before they can become family Jenny needs to learn what that word means. Jenny has no background in the real meaning of "family" but when Cal wants her to meet his and get to know hers, she knows the time has come. The difference in the two families is wide and jarring. Jenny has a lot to learn, but then so does Cal. When he meets her family, he discovers that the word family doesn't always mean the same thing to all people.
Jenny’s mother has planned a future for her daughter that does not include someone as ordinary as Cal Bennet. What could this small-town hick with no money and no connections do for her? How far will her mother go to see that Jenny accepts a life of high society and prestige? Will these two lovers come to an understanding of what their family will look like?

A very enticing snippet. You can't stand in the way of true love :)
ReplyDeleteThat's true, but the mom tries.
DeleteI'd say they definitely have some mommy/daughter issues. Sounds like Mom is a bit of a snob. Hopefully, they can resolve their differences or mom won't be at the wedding.
ReplyDeleteThis mom is really nuts!
DeleteNice snippet, PK. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteThanks BJ!
DeleteAlways enjoy the snippets and try to remember where in the book they are.
ReplyDeleteI do the same thing.
DeleteSounds awesome!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Breanna.
DeleteHer mother ought to know better than to throw out an ultimatum like that.
ReplyDeleteYou would think. But this woman is crazy.
DeleteThis was a great book!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Minelle!
DeleteThis story is still fresh in my mind. Her mother was surely an evil soul. Compliments again on the characterization in this book. Top drawer!
ReplyDeleteElla
Love you, Ella!
DeleteHi PK, I'm late to the party. Oh dear, mother sounds like someone to be reckoned with. Good on Jenny, love Cal's comment.
