It’s Saturday again and we have more snippets. I hope you’ll
take the time to check out each one. In my snippet today, from Cassie’s Life, I’m
going back to where Cassie is being blackmailed from someone from her past. She
and Sue had just come out the blackmailer’s hotel room window. Cassie stammers
around trying to come up with an explanation to the two sheriff’s deputies,
whom they all also knew as friends.
“I…
I didn’t wish to be seen coming from his room. It might seem improper.”
Brandon
looked at me as if I was insane. “Is that the story you’re sticking with?” he
asked.
“Give
me a minute and I’ll try to think of something else,” I barely muttered as I
reached down to dust off my pants. Only Jenny heard and she gave a short
nervous laugh.
“You
think this is funny?” Jake snapped at
her.
“No,
Jake, I’m sorry. It’s not funny. I’m just scared,” she told him.
“You
should be,” he said shortly.
Stepping
forward Jake looked in the window. We’d left some of the drawers opened, the
contents of the suitcase lay at the foot of one of the beds and the mattresses
weren’t centered on the beds.
“Looks
like the room’s been ransacked,” he told us.
Silence.
“Looks
like the window’s been busted from the outside,” he went on.
Silence.
“All
right ladies, we’re going to have to take you in for questioning. I have to
ask, are any of you armed?”
We
all looked at him in shock. “Of course not,” Sue told them firmly.
Brandon
spoke up, “Miss Cassie I know you have a permit to carry. Do you have your gun
with you?” he repeated the question.
“No,
Brandon, Tom won’t let me carry it,” I told him quietly.
“Does
he let you break into motel rooms?” Jake asked sarcastically and I gave him
what I hoped was a withering look.
Cassie’s Life (Book 10)
Ask Cassie about her life on the river and she’ll tell you it’s lovely and peaceful. But while Cassie loves the life she lives, peaceful is not always an accurate description. Whether she’s confronting an armed man who’s in a drunken rage, planning a friend’s wedding or dealing with a ghost in a backwoods lodge, Cassie is going to deal with it the best way she knows how. And peaceful doesn’t always work.
When a mysterious phone call comes for Cassandra Wentworth – Cassie’s past is suddenly back to haunt her in a devastating way. Tom has always said nothing from before the time they met counts, but he didn’t know about this. Sue, Annie, Allie and Jenny are all willing to help, but will it be enough?

Thanks Rosie! Cassie can make me laugh too.
DeleteTom's definitely going to hear about this. Great snippet!
ReplyDeleteNo doubt about that!
DeleteUm, the answer to Brandon's last question would be a "no," I think. I doubt Tom will be at all happy when he hears about this. Love your snippet, PK.
ReplyDeleteThe next conversation Cassie and Tom have is the hardest one they've ever had.
DeleteI can just imagine what Tom is going to say.
ReplyDeleteIt's not pretty.
