Saturday Spankings - Annie's gone

Welcome to Saturday Spankings! This is a big weekend for me, not only do I get to share another snippet from Secrets on the River, I was asked to do an interview for AllAuthor! I’ll have that up on Monday if you’d like to come by to read it.

In today’s snippet everyone in the family is worried about Annie. Andy turns first to Cassie and Sue, sure that they will know something helpful. But they are as bewildered as he is.

“Annie ran away in the middle of the night. Please, if you two know where she is you have to tell us,” Andy begged.

Tom stood beside Cassie as she sank into a chair next to Sue. She glanced at Andy and shook her head. “No. Not Annie. She wouldn’t do that. I don’t understand.”

“She’s right,” Sue added. “Annie’s the good one.”

Andy and Lily grimaced at this statement and exchanged stricken looks. “She left this note,” Andy told them, holding it out.

They read it with the others crowding behind them to read for themselves. “But she is!” Sue cried.

Annie being the ‘good one’ had been a family saying for years. Annie was just the sensible one. She was calm and levelheaded. Cassie and Sue were the wild ones. They loved practical jokes, they loved adventure and living on the edge. When provoked, they could cuss like sailors and fly off the handle or at times drink themselves into a stupor.

But not Annie, never Annie. She was a true lady and conducted herself like one in every situation. Lily often called her ‘my sweet angel’ while often referring to Cassie and Sue as ‘Thelma and Louise’ even though she loved them all with the fierceness of a mother bear.

Saturday Spanking - The Good One

Welcome to Saturday Spankings and happy December! Today’s snippet comes from Secrets on the River, the second in the On the River series – the third one has been accepted, so be looking for it in the not too distant future.

Of the three ladies who have been friends for more than fifty years, Annie is the good one. Always ladylike, she is quiet and refined. She might be drug along into some of Cassie and Sue more hairbrain plans, but it’s always reluctantly. No one can understand what has her so upset as she yells at Allie and Ryan before running out of the dinner party. Neither Andy nor Lily can get her to talk and they hope all will be better the next day.

Annie’s cries had quieted by the time Andy got ready for bed. He didn’t talk, hoping she was finally relaxed enough to get some sleep. Annie wasn’t sleeping, but she pretended to be. She couldn’t talk to Andy, not about this.  She continued to feign sleep until one-thirty, then slipped silently out of bed. She dressed in the closet without turning on lights. She’d left her car in the driveway and her suitcase had been in it for days. All she had to do was write a note.

I should have written it before now. Why didn’t I? Because there is no way I can explain anything in a note. She tiptoed back to the bedroom door and looked at Andy with longing.

The desire to wake him and have him hold her, hold her tight and never let go, nearly overwhelmed her. This was going to hurt him deeply. But not as deeply as if she stayed and he learned everything.

It was time to go, now before she lost her nerve. Taking a notecard from the desk, she picked up the pen and wrote quickly. The card was shoved into the envelope and Annie scribbled on the front, To my family. Then she left, driving through the dark night into the unknown.

Excerpt

“You can trust me, Jarrett. I won’t tell your parents anything you don’t want me to.” She sighed and stood as well. “You used to tell me everything. We never kept secrets.”

Jarrett paced between the coffee table and fireplace. “My parents’ opinion doesn’t matter. Dad would still throw up my juvie record or the fact that I’m not a cop, even if I was a model citizen. I’m not that lost, angry kid anymore. I know who I am now, and it’s not someone you’d want to know.”

“I disagree.”

“God, you don’t understand. Marissa, I’ve missed you so damn much. I’ve laid awake so many nights wondering what my life would’ve been like if I’d stayed here.” When he made love to other women, he imagined Marissa beneath him or above him, panting his name. When the nightmares of blood and gore faded, he dreamed of her. Those bittersweet memories and what if scenarios were almost worse than the nightmares. “I’ve done things I’m not proud of.”

“I hated you after you left, but I’ve gotten over it. Everyone feels regret and guilt over something. It’s all about being human.” She dashed away her tears. “I told you mine last night. Will you please show me the same courtesy?”

“I can’t.”

“At least tell me what you did last Christmas. Jason made it crystal clear that he didn’t want you alone. He wants you to have a tree.” She pointed at the Douglas fir. “Well, there you go. What did you do last year?”

Jarrett licked his dry lips, heat swelling in his cheeks.

He’d joined the Consuelo gang last December and spent the holiday in a slummy apartment with five thugs who sold cocaine on the streets of Albuquerque. Living around his drug of choice had nearly destroyed him.

“What about your last birthday?” Marissa blocked his path and braced her hands on her hips. “Did you have cake or go out with a bunch of buddies and get drunk? Did something horrible happen? Why won’t you tell me anything?”

He shoved a hand through his hair. “Damn it, Marissa. Yeah, I got drunk. A few of us went to a strip club where I fucked two dancers in a backroom. Is that what you wanted to hear?”

Her eyes widened as she stepped back.

Way to go, you fucking idiot. He brushed his shaky hands on his button-down shirt to steady them. “Marissa—”

She strode past him with a high head and left the room.

Her cold shoulder skewered him, but he didn’t deserve better.

Saturday Spanking - Annie's thoughts

Another Saturday is here so welcome to Saturday Spankings. I’m still putting up snippets from my latest book, Secrets on the River. Allie and Ryan have done some thinking about the birth of their first child. When they share their decisions with the family Annie – the good one, the quiet one the one, the one who always speaks as a mature calm lad – has her own take on their plans.

“I just wanted all of you to know, Ryan and I have been doing a lot of talking and research and discussing it with my doctor and we’ve come to a decision. We’re planning on a home birth,” Allie said in one fast breath.

Everyone froze in silence, staring at her. “Now don’t freak out. It’s becoming more and more common these days. This town has two excellent midwives, they aren’t looked down on by the doctors. We’re working with Ruth Sanders. She and her assistant are a great team and they have a doctor on call too.  They have emergency equipment with them just in case it’s needed. So it’s really very safe.”

Everyone continued looking at them, but no one spoke for a long moment. Then Tom asked, “Son, are you comfortable with this decision?”

“I wasn’t at first, I admit. But after talking with everyone involved I’ve really got on board. I like the idea of this little one being born in our home, right here on the river and I like that some of you all could be at the birth. That is, if you want to. You don’t have to or anything, but you’d be here to be able to see the baby right away.”

Cassie felt uneasy about the whole thing. “I don’t know. I know it’s your decision… but I’d rather you be at a hospital with equipment and a specialist right outside your door when the baby comes. Can this midwife, or whatever, give you sufficient pain medication? From what little I know about it you’re going to need some.”

Allie shook her head. “We’ve decided on natural childbirth. No drugs. The doctor and midwife say that’s fine. Women do it all different ways now. I want to be clear-headed and alert when the baby comes.”

“That the way God meant it to be,” Lily spoke up. “I got nothin’ ‘gainst ‘mergency ‘quipment, but I think babies does best when they comes natural-like.”

“You’re both nuts,” Sue said, sounding disgusted. “If I’d ever had a baby, I’d have demanded an epidural about the sixth month just to be safe.”

Everyone laughed and Cassie glanced back toward Annie. Cassie’s laughter stopped and she half rose. “Annie…?” Annie’s face had gone pale. Not pale, Cassie thought, totally bloodless. She looked as though she were in pain, but at the same time she seemed to shake with a fury that Cassie had never seen in her in all the time she’d known her.

“Stupid,” they heard. “Stupid, STUPID, STUPID!” Annie was shouting. She rose to her feet and slammed her hand down on the table as she rounded on Allie and Ryan. “A perfectly good hospital not three miles away and you’re willing to risk that baby’s life and your own on some romantic whim to ‘have the baby born on the river?’ Why not have it in the boat, or better yet, just give birth in the river itself? Would that be natural enough for you? Just take an aspirin and pop that baby right out in the water! You’re idiots! You’re too damn stupid to raise a child!”
